Description

The residency of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Shanghai — comprising two opera performances and one orchestral concert — has captivated local audiences.

Among them was Wu Jiayu, a high school student studying conducting at the High School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, who attended all three programmes from October 1 to 3. She was deeply impressed by the performances.

Critics and fans alike have voiced out strong support for the residency on social media and in major newspapers.

A direct agreement between the two institutions, coupled with generous support from the Shanghai municipal government, helped make ticket prices far more accessible — roughly half the cost of similar performances in Munich, and about one-third of what audiences pay for the Berlin Philharmonic or Vienna Philharmonic in Shanghai, both of which are handled by private agencies.

In this video, Wu Jiayu calls for the Bayerische Staatsoper to return to Shanghai every year — a decision that ultimately rests with China’s cultural policymakers and the company’s leadership.

Filmed on 3 October in Shanghai. This is a Chinese-language programme with no subtitles.
