Description

Ten years is a long time in music and it’s a long time in life. The last time Louisville, Kentucky, black-metal group Anagnorisis released a record it was with 2016’s Peripeteia. A lot has happened between that time and the imminent release of that record’s follow up, Caregriever.

Perhaps most impactful over that time (certainly in the case of the latest record) was the process of Zachary Kerr’s father in-law gradually succumbing to Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Both Zachary and his wife took her father into their home when he was no longer able to live on his own and look after himself. The emotional devastation and anticipatory grief of this several-year experience were the elements from which Caregriever was born.

Initially constructed in its early form by Zachary alone, he brought in friend and long-time collaborator Zak Denham and the project ultimately found its final form as the latest Anagnorisis record.

Caregriever is both a harrowing and sonically harsh listening experience, but also one with glimmers of hope and beauty within it, the latter somehow making the album all the more powerful and emotionally resonant.

Both Zachary and Zak join me to discuss the record, its origins, the construction of the music, its production and some history of the band itself.
