In this episode, we ask ourselves about the overlap between AI and mental health. We discuss professional reactions to AI in the mental health field, the different places AI might be intersecting with the work that we do, is AI therapy a thing, and the topic of staying humble about what we offer as therapists. Our low-key fears of robot armies and social isolation, inspired by sci-fi movies like Ex Machina (2014) and Her (2013), give us mixed feelings about chatbots as emotional support animals. After some brief chat-botting to fill in a knowledge gap about the emergence of homo sapiens, we’re thinking about the different ways humans have coped with emotions and adversity long before psychotherapy existed and how we might cope in the future.
