Description

Last Sunday, Bethany Baptist Church of Newark, New Jersey invited me to be in conversation with Columbia School of Journalism’s Dean, Jelani Cobb, and the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agency’s CEO, Jennifer Jones Austin. We had in a church house the kind of conversation we try to host here at Our Moral Moment, so I’m glad to be able to share it with you here.

I drove from Newark to Washington, DC, to meet with clergy for a public witness against Trump’s immoral war in the Middle East. Since Holy Week, Repairers of the Breach has organized Moral Mondays outside the White House and Congressional offices across the country, demanding an end to the immoral war of choice initiated by President Trump on February 28th. This war has imposed unnecessary violence in the Middle East and violence here at home, as it continues to raise the cost of living and waste resources that could be used to lift poor people. As of Friday, May 1, this war is illegal under the 1973 War Powers Act, which requires Congressional authorization of any military action initiated by the US President within 60 days.

I invite you to share this invitation for clergy and moral leaders to help us build coordinated Moral Monday Peace Rallies in DC and around the country on May 11. When we say no to war and policy violence in the power of nonviolent love, we can drive out the unclean spirits that are holding us captive and welcome a spirit of life into our common house.
