It cannot be made any clearer than this. By making use of the Lord’s illustration here, abiding means being connected as a branch to a Vine, possessing no independent life of godship of its own but drawing moment by moment upon the Life of the Vine for strength, nourishment, and power to bear fruit and live day to day. There must be no splitting or cutting that would cause the branch to be in anything less than perpetual participation with the sap (Holy Spirit) that flows freely through the Vine for function, growth, and purpose of living.
