a Guided Meditation

Ascent through the Atmosphere

[Opening – Grounding in the Body]

Find a comfortable position and settle in - perhaps seated or lying down.

You can stand, too - if you like.

Let your hands rest gently - on your lap, on your knees, or down by your sides.

Close your eyes, too - if that feels safe.

Take a slow, deep breath in… and exhale, letting the weight of the day begin to soften.

Again…

inhale deeply… and release, feeling your body supported by the ground beneath you.

There is nowhere else you need to be. Nothing to solve. Just this moment.

Again…inhale

…and release.

[The Balloon – A Vessel of Stillness]

Now, in your mind’s eye, find yourself standing in a wide, open field just before dawn. The air is cool and still, tinged with the scent of dew and Earth.

Again…inhale

…and release.

Before you, a hot air balloon is preparing for a float-flight!

Its fabric gently billowing, tethered to the Earth like a sleeping giant. The basket is woven from warm, golden cane, itself worn smooth by time.

You step inside.

It's carpeted with richly detailed fabric. The ropes are silken and shiny.

The flame ignites with a soft roar, and the balloon begins to stir.

With each inbreath, the balloon lifts - inch by inch.

The mooring ropes are untied and fall away. The ground begins to recede. You are rising.

…inhale and rise...

…releasing tension as you exhale.

[The Troposphere – The Familiar World Below]

At first, you see the tops of trees, rooftops, winding roads.

Chimney smoke curls somewhere just below, with starlings swooping through its tendrils.

The world you know is still close - its details sharp and familiar. You can almost reach down and touch the life you’ve been living: the conversations, the deadlines, the dilemmas. They’re still there, but already…somewhat less sharply seen, somehow somewhat quieter.

As you rise into the troposphere, the air thins slightly.

Clouds drift past like slow-moving thoughts. You pass through them - cool mist brushing your skin.

Take a slow, deep breath in…

and exhale gently...

Again…inhale and float higher

…and release tension and ballast.

The sun begins to rise, casting long golden rays across the curve of the Earth.

From here, the problems you carried begin to lose their edges. They are no longer the whole Sky.

[The Stratosphere – a Broader View]

Higher still. You enter the stratosphere.

The blue of the Sky deepens into indigo.

A grand ink spill, at first seemingly black but slowly seen to be the deepest blue.

The Sky is both deep blue and deep. As are you.

The clouds are far below now, like scattered islands in a vast ocean.

Floating island wisps.

Weather systems whorl and swirl in slow motion. Their waters rise and flow so slow. Jet streams carve invisible paths through the air. The wake of flow.

From this height, borders vanish. Cities blur into continents. The world is no longer a map of problems, but a single, breathing organism.

You are no longer a catalogue of problems, but a single, breathing organism.

You begin to feel it: The smallness of your own story within the vastness of all stories. Not insignificant - just…not alone.

[The Mesosphere – Dissolving Boundaries]

As you ascend into the mesosphere, the air grows colder, thinner.

The balloon drifts silently now, carried by unseen currents. The sky darkens further - stars begin to emerge, faint and flickering.

It is daytime but the cosmos' candles burn in view of your floating basket.

Take a slow, deep breath in…

and exhale gently...

Again…inhale

…and release.

You are between worlds. Between breath and space. Between knowing and not knowing.

Here, the problem you brought with you becomes translucent. You can see through it - see its origins, its fears, its grasping.

And you can see beyond it. There is room here for paradox. For not having the answer. For simply being.

[The Thermosphere – The Edge of Earthly Concern]

Now, you rise into the thermosphere.

The Earth below is a glowing orb, wrapped in ribbons of aurora.

The silence is profound.

You are weightless.

Time slows.

From this vantage point, the concerns of your life - so urgent, so consuming - become threads in a vast and beautiful tapestry. A luminous, numinous tapestry.

They are part of you, yes. But they are not all of you.

You are the Sky that holds them. You are the space between stars.

[The Exosphere – Dissolution and Return]

At the edge of the exosphere, the balloon no longer rises.

There is only stillness.

breath in…

and exhale...

…inhale

…release.

The Earth below, radiant and whole. The Cosmos above, infinite and unknowable. And you - suspended between them.

Breathing. Being.

Let this perspective settle into your bones. Let it soften this usual grip of urgency.

Let it remind you: You are not here to solve everything. You are here to witness. To participate. To return with clarity and compassion.

[Descent – Reentry with Spaciousness]

Now, the balloon begins its gentle descent...

With each exhalation, the balloon steadily settles earthward. The balloon lowers slowly, gently

Layer by layer, you return - through the thermosphere, the mesosphere, the stratosphere.

Each level bringing you closer to the world you left behind. But something has shifted. You are not the same.

As you pass through the troposphere, the clouds part. The land returns. The field appears once more.

You touch down - lightly, quietly.

[Closing – Integration]

Come to feel your body once again. The weight of your hands. The rhythm of your breath. The quiet presence of your own awareness.

When you’re ready, gently open your eyes.

Remember this spaciousness.

Remember this perspective.

Not as an escape, but as a reminder: You are vast. And you are home.

Thank you.
