Why I'm Making My Memoir Free
I've decided to remove the paywall from my memoir and music video series, Singing Through the Shadows. Inspiring people to share their own stories matters more to me than making a few dollars off my art.
What This Series Is About
Giving my younger self a chance to be seen and heard. She had opportunities, but low self-esteem, fear of rejection, and some legitimate reasons to be afraid held her back. These songs were recorded a long time ago and never released — until now.
The Problem with Perfectionism in Music
The music industry has moved further and further into manufactured perfection:
80s/90s: Real singers with incredible voices (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion)
Late 90s: Manufactured groups, factory-produced sound
2000s-now: Auto-tune and technology so sophisticated that human voices sound like AI
By the time AI music arrived, I thought — what's the difference? Music has sounded machine-made for years.
Why Imperfection Matters
My recordings have out-of-tune notes. I recorded them in a living room studio in the early 2000s with no auto-tune. And that's okay — because that's what a human voice does.
Now I crave imperfection. I want to hear voices shake. I want to hear someone miss a beat and recover. It tells me I'm listening to a real human being.
My Challenge to You
You have a story. You have something unique to say. You've been through something, learned from it, and you're still going — that's a hero's journey.
