Where things are right now

Our world is broken politically and ecologically - but you know this. You know what’s going on, and you know it’s not good. (Michael Glavin)

We know. We all see that politically, things are volatile, and environmentally, we feel the uncomfortable heat and see the disasters happening around us.

Right now, we can all see that what we thought was indestructible and reliable is turning out to be brittle and vacuous. It is a terrifying time, but it is not a place that we need to be stuck in.

By talking with each other, sharing knowledge and information, and taking action, we can keep the light on in a room that seems impossibly dark.

You feel anger, sadness, fear, rage - sometimes you feel helpless or powerless to stop it and try to block it out and go about your day, but it’s always there. A constant source of stress. I’m here to tell you that your feelings are normal … These are all valid responses to a world in crisis.

Michael Glavin

My fears are your fears too

I feel the same as you - the anger, frustration, and despair. We are all impacted by what is going on around us, and it is normal to feel these emotions because they reflect reality truthfully. We are in a tough spot.

How can we cope in a world that feels so broken? That is a huge question, an important question, and we need to answer that question, but even that doesn’t in and of itself doesn’t feel like enough! We need to cope, but that doesn’t address the underlying problem.

Michael Glavin

Through this podcast, I hope to provide you with two things: knowledge and action, because we need to understand what is happening, and we also need to address the situation. How can we come together, take action, and set things right?

Why I started this podcast

I felt - and feel - just like you. After searching everywhere for people who are talking about what is going on and who are trying to make things better, I couldn’t find many.

I wanted to find and be part of holistic discussions that were combining what is happening politically, what is happening ecologically, and what is happening to us emotionally.

We need to look at the political and ecological realities of this historical moment, and the psychological impact that this is having on us, so that we can process our feelings adequately and take effective action towards social justice and ecological sustainability. That is why I started Resilience in Dark Times.

Who am I?

I’m Michael, and I care deeply about our world, all of its people and creatures. What is happening politically and ecologically to me is horrifying, and I feel the urge to do something about it.

I need to speak out, and I want to use my privilege to connect with people and take action, because my position is much safer than other people across the world right now. I feel, therefore, that it’s my duty to help others as best I can.

Professionally, I’m a licensed psychologist. I help people overcome depression, anxiety, and trauma, for both individuals and couples.

Over the last year or so, especially the last few months, I’ve noticed a dramatic shift in my clients. Their pain is no longer solely personal pain: more and more people are feeling distressed because of the political and ecological situation we find ourselves in. I can help them each individually, and I do, but the threat is not individual; it’s collective.
