I think this is important for us to know the commands of God.
God knows us and He made us. He knows what is best for us and others. He knows how we work and what is important for us to do and to not do. So God gave us these rules or commands to live by—not because He wants to control us to not let us have any fun but because He loves and cares for us.
He is our good Father after all.
Think of it like this. As a child there was a rule in our home that if I went outside to play that I could not go out into the street. If I did then I know I would get in trouble and even punished. Their rule was there not because my parents didn’t want me to have fun playing. It was a rule made out of love.
Cars are fast and oftentimes would not notice a small child running through the street to save her ball. I could get hurt or worse. My parents, who love me, made this rule to protect me.
God is the same.
God loves us and wants to protect us—His children. God in His goodness and mercy made these rules to do just that = protect us.
More than just that, the commandments teach us two very important things. Really they are the most important things as Jesus tells us.
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” —Matthew 22:36-40
All of the commandments are boiled down into these two things. Loving God and loving others.
In this episode we are going to be learning about the first half of the 10 Commandments which is all about how we love God!
