Welcome to Issue 15!
Hello and welcome to It’s Kismet, a biweekly curated list of holistic health content I thought was worth sharing with more people. This week the World Health Assembly and Davos at the World Economic Forum are all happening at the same time, if you haven’t yet, tune in and check out some of the conversations happening on a global stage for sustainability, health, disaster, and business!
Wherever you live in the world, you must be feeling how the weather is changing from its normal routine. The North American west coast is hotter than ever (or at least it feels like it), the ice is melting in the North Pole, Winters are more wintery, spring sprung too quickly, and autumn is not as cold as it should be. All the changes in weather - and their related disasters - have brought a lot of people to one point: ✨Environmental Consciousness✨
I don’t want to go into sustainability and how you can minimize your impact on the environment by using a paper straw. But I always think about what impact we humans have on the environment. I’m a firm believer that, just like other living creatures, humans shape nature as it shapes us. We fish too much, fly too much, and plant things in places we should not plant. So, I wanted to share an interesting fact I learned a little while ago about Eucalyptus trees. Most of us have tasted Eucalyptus or smelled it. It has a strong taste that wakes your nose up. Eucalyptus trees are native to Australia, where they have multiple varieties and cover 3/4 of Australian forests, called Eucalypt forests. Being native to Australia means it has adapted to fire, so it has seeds that survive fire and then sprout after.
What most people don’t know is that Eucalyptus trees are an invasive species. They hurts the growth of other plants around them, they’re a fire hazard, the only animal that benefits from them is the Koala, and they are EVERYWHERE now. At some point, people decided they really like Eucalyptus trees so as they traveled around the world, they kept planting them. This has changed entire landscapes and created problems that didn’t exist before.
Long story short, we have an impact, whether we like it or not.– Lili
