Good Morning. It’s Sunday, October 12th, and this is The Record🗞️.Today’s show is about collapse—political, moral, and infrastructural. From another mass shooting in South Carolina, to RFK Jr.’s purge of public health workers, to a coup attempt led by Gen Z protesters in Madagascar—
This isn’t just chaos, it’s also the news.Let’s get into it.🗞️ 1: 4 Killed, 20 Hurt in South Carolina Bar Shooting What’s Happening:A shooting at Willie’s Bar & Grill on St. Helena Island left four people dead and twenty injured early Sunday morning.Hundreds were inside when gunfire broke out just after 1 a.m.No arrests yet, though a “person of interest” is being questioned.
What to Know:The sheriff’s office said victims ran into nearby businesses for safety. This was supposed to be a local night out. It became another scene of American carnage.
My Take:We treat these shootings like weather reports—inevitable, passing, impersonal. But this is policy. This is culture. This is who we’ve chosen to be when profit beats people every single time.🗞️ 2: RFK Jr. Fires Over 1,000 CDC Staff During Shutdown What’s Happening:Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed more than 1,000 scientists and public health officials from the Department of Health and Human Services late Friday night—many from the CDC.The move came amid the second week of a government shutdown, part of what insiders describe as a political purge to “punish Democrats.”
What to Know:Entire divisions investigating outbreaks were wiped out—then half were told the firings were a “coding error.”Officials called it “a bloodbath.” Others called it “the death of the CDC.”Meanwhile, measles outbreaks continue to spread in multiple states.
My Take:This isn’t just dysfunction—it’s dismantling. You can’t claim to protect America while gutting the very systems that keep people alive.Chaos is the strategy. And fear is the point.
🗞️ 3: Madagascar President Says Coup Underway What’s Happening:Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina says an attempted coup is underway after soldiers from an elite unit joined anti-government protests demanding he resign. One soldier has been killed, and the president’s location is currently unknown.
What to Know:The protests, led by Gen Z activists, have lasted three weeks—sparked by power outages, poverty, and corruption. The government fired its entire cabinet to calm things down. It didn’t work. The African Union is urging restraint, and the U.S. Embassy has told citizens to shelter in place.
My Take:When young people lead uprisings, they’re not chasing chaos—they’re answering it.Madagascar’s Gen Z isn’t rebelling for rebellion’s sake. They’re doing what every generation does when the system stops listening: they push back.Maybe we should pay attention.
🧠Gut CheckToday’s through line is decay.Whether it’s democracy, science, or public safety—institutions rot when we stop holding them accountable. And when people finally do, the system calls it rebellion. It’s not rebellion. It’s repair.
