On November 1st, 1861, McClellan seemingly enjoyed a moment of unmatched triumph. He accepted the position of General-in-Chief of the United States Army. Behind this lay a great deal of hard work managing the Army of the Potomac. Yet also, his road had been smoothed, not with battlefield glory, but political machinations. And his rise was General Winfield Scott’s fall.
