CINQUE COSE BELLE… About Shop signs and shopping.
Caro lettore, eccoci arrivati alla lettera n.5! Se hai letto tutte le altre complimenti! e se ti sei appena iscritto benvenuto!
Le settimane volano ed io sono sempre un po’ in ritardo nello spedire questa lettera. Forse dovrei mandarla sempre la domenica? Cosa ne pensi?
Comunque, ho una voglia matta di andare in Italia. Sarà perché si avvicina il Natale o perché le giornate qui a Dromana sono piovose, ma non vedo l’ora di essere a casa ed andare a fare un giro tra le mie colline.
Da quando vivo in Australia vedo l’Italia con occhi diversi. Quando torno a casa passo ore ed ore a fare fotografie a cose e posti che in passato davo per scontati. Ora apprezzo ogni singolo dettaglio, quando vado a fare shopping per le vie del centro, mi affascinano le insegne dei negozi e dei bar, soprattutto quelli di torino.
Le strade italiane sono tempestate di scritte: da quelle sui muri alle insegne dei negozi, dai cartelloni pubblicitari alle etichette dei citofoni.
Spesso dico ai miei studenti:
Quando andate in giro per la città anche se non siete in Italia, guardatevi intorno perche’, le città spesso possono regalarvi inaspettate parole in Italiano!
Cosi, questa settimana ti consiglio di fare attenzione a tutte le parole che vedrai in Italiano per la tua città.

Weeks fly by and I am always a bit late in sending this letter. Maybe I should always send it on Sunday? What do you think?
Anyway, I have a great desire to go to Italy. Maybe it's because Christmas is approaching or because the days here in Dromana are rainy, but I can't wait to be home and go for a ride in my hills.
Since I have lived in Australia, I have seen Italy with different eyes. When I get home I spend hours and hours taking pictures of things and places that I used to take for granted in the past. Now I appreciate every single detail, when I go shopping in the streets of the center, I am fascinated by the signs of shops and bars, especially those in Turin.
The Italian streets are studded with writings: from those on the walls to the shop signs, from the billboards to the labels of the intercoms.
I often tell my students:
When you go around citys even if you are not in Italy, look around because they can often gift you unexpected words in Italian!
So, this week I advise you to pay attention to all the words you will see in Italian around your city.
So, here is my collection of 5 great things to read, watch, listen to, and maybe (if you want) study for this week. You can watch them all or just some, and if you are a student of mine, we can talk about them during our next class.

COSA BELLA 1: LESSON OF THE WEEK
Fare shopping o fare la spesa?
Conosci la differenza tra queste espressioni?
“Fare la spesa" = (grocery shopping) comprare cose alimentari.
es. Ho bisogno di pane e caffè, devo andare a fare la spesa al supermercato
“Fare spese” o "Fare shopping" = (to do shopping) comprare qualsiasi cosa eccetto i beni alimentari.
es. Maria si sposa, devo andare a fare spese/shopping per comprarmi qualcosa di bello da mettere al matrimonio.
“Guardare le vetrine” = (Window shopping) guardare le vetrine dei negozi per immaginare o valutare l'acquisto di un bene senza necessariamente doverlo comperare

Lasciati affascinare dalla collezione della grafica e designer Molly Woodward che si chiama Vernacular Typography. Un gigantesco archivio online con oltre diecimila scatti raccolti in tutto il mondo.
Se vuoi invece un libro da tenere sul tavolino, allora cerca Grafica della Stradadi Louise Fili. Un libro fotografico con insegne da Torino a Taormina.
