Today’s Office of the Readings includes a letter from Ignatius of Antioch on the role of Deacons in the Church. Ignatius begins his letter from the language of communion. Christianity for him is not an isolated spiritual experience. It’s covenantal. God gathers a people into an ordered body together with him. And deacons are ministers of the mysteries of Jesus Christ.
