Welcome back to Teeny Bopper TV Breakdown! Today we recap Breaker High, episode 39, “Max He Can Hat Dance.” Only five more to go!

Alex is feeling especially homesick this episode - in his package from home, he gets a bottle of his mom’s secret barbecue sauce (the family camp-out is that weekend and he’s going to miss it), plus his high school baseball team made the playoffs even though he was hoping they’d be terrible without him as their star pitcher. So when he learns his host family for the weekend in Cozumel looks a lot like his real one, with three daughters and a live-in grandma, it makes him even sadder. Ashley tells him that if there’s nothing to keep him on Breaker High, maybe he should go back to Texas, but instead of saying “You’re here, of course there’s something for me!” he takes her at her word and realizes he could actually get home in about two days from where they are. Then it seems like Alex wants Ashley to stop him, but she’s already convinced he doesn’t care enough about her to stay, so it’s just a snowball of miscommunication from there.

Jimmy is upset because instead of immediately showing him how to make burritos, “Grandma Reyes” had him doing chores all weekend, including folding washcloths, using a washboard to scrub and rinse, and filling pinatas. This may be the Mexican version of “wax on, wax off,” though - the washboard turns into a cheese grater, scooping and sprinkling the pinata filling works for ground meat, and the folding technique transfers to tortillas.

Cassidy and Max are at am impasse again - Cassidy wants to dance at a fiesta, but Max is still self-conscious over how he looked when they last danced in Norway. So Max goes to Sean, who may not be an athlete but has shown himself to have some natural rhythm, to teach him how to salsa. Once Max and Sean get dancing, as we might expect it takes Max a few minutes to get over the perceived hit to his masculinity, but we do eventually get there. Sean’s egging him on doesn’t exactly help, but Max does get good. He surprises Cassidy at the fiesta, and she’s thrilled.

With help from outsiders (the host family’s daughter and Jimmy of all people), Ashley and Alex finally talk to each other when Alex doesn’t leave after all and finds Ashley at the fiesta after realizing that while he misses home now, once he got home he’d miss her more. They confess their love for each other and it’s adorable.
