Welcome back to Teeny Bopper TV Breakdown! Today we recap Breaker High, episode 43, “Heartbreaker High.” One more to go after this, then time for a new show!
In Ashley and Tamira’s cabin, Alex notices that Max’s leather jacket is lying on Ashley’s bed. He asks why it’s there, and Ashley says Cassidy left it after visiting with Tamira, but she’s very unconvincing while doing so. Alex grabs it to bring back to his roommate, but he and we can tell there’s got to be more to the story.
After the theme song, Sean is reinventing himself - at Jimmy’s expense, given that it’s 6:30 am and he’s got all the lights on in their cabin. The two weeks Sean gave himself to get over Tamira are officially up, and he’s going to throw a Sean-dezvous soiree to prove just how over her he is (spoiler alert: he’s not).
Alex is brooding on the deck, and Jimmy finds himself in “listener/advice” mode once again as Alex, after asking Jimmy to promise not to tell, confesses he thinks Ashley’s cheating on him with Max, citing the jacket as evidence. Jimmy insists there’s no way and shares famous duos they remind him of, including Siskel and Ebert. Alex protests, “But they’re guys!” as Jimmy leaves - so what? Don’t think that line would be included in anything today, that’s for sure.
Sean is hanging up a sign advertising his Sean-dezvous, which of course is exactly when Tamira walks by, and they proceed to have the most awkward conversation ever. She then meets up with Cassidy and Denise, and judging by that interaction seems like she’s in a similar space to Sean - pretending she’s totally over him when in reality she’s not (and again, everyone on-screen and off can see right through her). A random guy apparently named Brent Hardy then comes up and asks if she’ll go to the party with him, and she immediately says yes (doesn’t hurt that he’s cute).
Jimmy sees Max coming out of Ashley’s room as she tells him, “Not a word to anyone!”, which convinces Jimmy that Alex has it right. Meanwhile, Tamira tells Sean that she’s coming to his party with Brent, which means Sean has to say he’s bringing a date, too - hope Kerry Buckingham goes along with his plan.
Ashley tells Alex she has something important to talk to him about, but can’t tell him right then - he needs to meet her on deck at 8 pm and all will be revealed. So now Alex is even more confused. His basketball rolls under Max’s desk, and when he retrieves it he spots a pile of photos of Ashley, which certainly puts an unhappy expression on his face. So that has to be right when Jimmy walks in to confirm what they both think is true, and Alex decides he’s going to break up with Ashley before she has the chance to break up with him.
In the coffeehouse, Sean is panicking about having to approach Kerry Buckingham, even telling himself, “Note to self: in the future, ask first, announce later, okay?” Luckily for him, though she has no idea who he is, she’d still love to go to the party with him, so he can officially disregard his own advice, no matter how stunned he actually is about the whole thing.
Max and Ashley are in Ashley’s cabin, and right after Max asks, “So how are you going to do it? Man, I can’t wait to see the look on his face,” clearly referring to Alex, the teen in question storms into the room and accuses them of sneaking around behind his back. They explain that Max was in fact painting a portrait of Ashley, which was going to be the surprise for Alex that evening for their five-week anniversary. So Alex feels a little silly, and Max bursts out laughing at the thought of himself and Ashley as a couple, to the point where Ashley starts to get a little offended. Alex and Ashley hug, and it seems like everything between them should be okay.
It’s Sean-dezvous time, and Sean is making the rounds with Kerry by his side. When they stop to talk to Brent and Tamira, it becomes clear that Brent and Kerry happen to be exes too, and they might be feeling the same things Sean and Tamira are, by both the looks on their faces and the fact that when Sean and Kerry leave to dance, Brent and Tamira stand by the wall and observe them, to the point where Brent can’t stand it anymore and cuts in on the other couple. Kerry calls out Brent’s jealousy, they both call Tamira by the wrong name, and then kiss, leaving Sean and Tamira dateless. Ostensibly talking about Brent and Kerry, Tamira says to Sean that the couple never should have broken up in the first place, and some people don’t know what they have even when it’s right in front of them, but somehow doesn’t realize the multiple applications of her words until she’s already said them aloud.
While Alex and Ashley have made up, they forgot to tell one person: Jimmy. So when Jimmy sees Ashley giving Max a side hug at the party, he tosses multiple drinks all over the “culprit.” Jimmy is trying to stick up for his friend, but maybe let them explain? Alex smooths things over, but the look in Max’s eyes is enough to send Jimmy running, with Max right after him.
