So next up in our community-requested topics: ICE. It’s hard to think of an agency that makes us feel more helpless, or whose actions have more life and death impact on our Region. Families are broken. People are missing. Our neighbors are STILL struggling. It matters. Deeply.
In general, the panel agreed that all candidates have danced around the topic of ICE and their plans to protect Lake County from ICE agent behavior, citing Indiana state law that mandates cooperation. Most on the panel felt this was a shameful dodge on all their parts, because there are ways they can take steps to promote safer ICE interactions here in Lake County. Only two candidates were brave enough to say anything concrete about ICE, Jerry Williams and Edward Jenkins. Everyone on the panel wants to hear more specifics, ASAP.
