The White House just launched a new website about Christopher Columbus. Whoever created it plagiarized century old propaganda to erase history.
In 1893 the United States hosted a massive Worlds Fair in Chicago. To impress Europe leaders needed a grand founding myth. They chose Columbus as the ultimate symbol of progress. They built grand white palaces to celebrate white civilization. At the exact same time they put Indigenous peoples in cages as living exhibits.
This deliberate brainwashing forced citizens to link Columbus with the future and Native people with extinction. They even created the Pledge of Allegiance to build aggressive nationalism.
Today the White House website copies this exact propaganda. It treats Native history as an invisible footnote to real American history. This is a dangerous return to Gilded Age nationalism. It relies on a sanitized myth to demand blind obedience.
But we can fight back just like heroes did in 1893. Activists like Simon Pokagon Ida B Wells and Frederick Douglass exposed the brutal truth. True patriots face reality and work to make the nation better.
