An AI framework developed at the University of New Mexico and Los Alamos National Laboratory solved a materials physics calculation that has resisted efficient computation for nearly a century - running more than 400 times faster than conventional molecular dynamics simulations by expressing the problem as connected tensor networks and identifying crystal symmetries that brute-force methods cannot exploit. The team tested it on copper, crystalline argon under extreme pressure, and tin’s solid-solid phase transition. The framework is open source and available on GitHub, which means any materials science laboratory with a standard computer can now perform calculations previously confined to national laboratory infrastructure. A 400-fold speedup changes what is structurally feasible to investigate across battery chemistries, superconductors, and clean fuel catalysts.
A Booz Allen Hamilton report published today found that threat actors have adopted AI-enabled offensive cybersecurity capabilities faster than defenders have adopted them for defense. The report documents the HexStrike framework compromising thousands of Citrix Netscaler devices in under ten minutes using a single vulnerability - faster than CISA’s standard 15-day remediation window by an order of magnitude. The same asymmetry surfaced in Southern California’s regulatory process, where an AI advocacy platform generated more than 20,000 public comments opposing clean heat rules that regulators had received no institutional framework to verify or authenticate. The board voted 7-5 against rules estimated to save 2,500 lives. California’s Attorney General and Los Angeles District Attorney are now being asked to investigate. On the generative media front, ByteDance postponed the global launch of Seedance 2.0 after Hollywood studios sent cease-and-desist letters over outputs producing recognizable performances by real actors from two-line prompts. The delay reflects the same pattern across cybersecurity, democratic participation, and creative rights: governance frameworks developing the edges needed to match what generative systems can now produce.
Washington University researchers discovered that clusters of epithelial cells can sense physical features up to 100 microns away by collectively pulling on surrounding collagen fibers - ten times the range of individual cells - with implications for understanding how cancer spreads through tissue and potential therapeutic strategies for disrupting that navigation. UC Santa Barbara physicists identified a rare quantum material where magnetic and electronic frustration coexist and interact, a state that can potentially be controlled through external strain and that opens new pathways for quantum technology research.
