The TVCC Cardinals will take an 2-0 SWJCFC record into Saturday’s game against the Blinn Buccaneers. The Cardinals should be well rested coming off an open week while the Buccaneers (1-2) will be looking to rebound after a 39-27 loss to Navarro last week.
TVCC has looked better every week since starting off the season with a loss against Snow College.
“The kids are playing well,” said Coach Poteete, “the defense is playing really good, it’s kept us in games.”
This week will be a challenge, however, because Blinn is playing better than its record suggests. The Buccaneers lost to No. 1-ranked New Mexico Military Institute by a field goal two weeks ago and nearly came back against Navarro last week after falling behind early.
“They’ve lost close games,” Coach Poteete said.
Coach Poteete said the Buccaneers may have the best two running backs in the conference and, in fact, Blinn is leading the nation in rushing and is averaging 265 yards per game on the ground. Both running backs – JJ Branham and Willie Eldridge – are in the Top 5 in rushing in the conference
“That’s what they’ve been doing really well,” he said.
TVCC has also been running the ball well, and Quincy Thompson is second in the conference in yards per game with 95.8 and is in the Top 5 in rushing attempts, total yards, yards per rush, and touchdowns.
So Saturday could come down to who can run the ball the best.
“We have to stop the run,” said Coach Poteete. “That is the first and foremost on defense.”
Saturday is Family Day at TVCC with activities scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gym including the introduction of TVCC students, games, and free food. The game against Blinn will kick off at Bruce Field at 3 p.m.
