The TVCC Cardinals travel to Corsicana this Saturday to play the Navarro Bulldogs. Both teams have a 1-2 conference record. The Cardinals want to keep the momentum going after last week’s 13-10 win over Blinn College. The Cardinals' defense has been the star of the season so far. Last week, they forced Blinn to punt 10 times and held them to 3-of-15 on third-down. “Our defense is playing great,” said Coach Poteete. “Coach (Blake) Bryan and his staff are doing a great job putting a scheme together each week, and the players are executing. Field position was huge for us, and that early turnover set us up with a short field.”Coach Poteete is talking about a highlight reel one-handed interception by Paul Singleton that set up TVCC's first touchdown. This was also the first time the Cardinals used the new challenge system, successfully overturning the original call on the field. Now, the Cardinals are getting ready for Navarro, a team that can score a lot of points. The Bulldogs just had a week off, but in their last game, they were leading 30-7 against Blinn before losing a high-scoring game. “They’ve got some good players,” Poteete said. “Their running back might be one of the best in our conference. He was an all-conference player last year, and he’s really good.”The Cardinals' offense has been getting a lot of yards and moving the ball well, but they’ve struggled to finish drives and turn those yards into touchdowns, especially in the red zone. "We’ve moved the ball really well between the 20s," said Coach Poteete, "but can we be more precise in the red zone? When we’re on offense, can we put the ball in the end zone? And when we’re on defense, can we hold them to field goals? Those are the things that are going to determine the outcome.”Saturday’s game starts at 1 p.m. in Corsicana, and Coach Poteete is hoping to see lots of Cardinal fans there. “We’ve got the best fans in our league, and having that energy in the stands makes a difference,” he said.
