Description

Henderson County Judge Wade McKinney said he and the commissioners were "so pleased" with an update they received from the Athens Animal Rescue Shelter Tuesday morning.

"This program is exceeding all over our original thoughts," he said during our podcast this week. "It has been an outstanding success." (Listen to this discussion from the start of the podcast above.)

Board President Lynette Ainsworth and Shelter Director Jennifer Miller both spoke before Commissioners Court this week, updating commissioners on what's been happening at the shelter since the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake took over April 1.

The short answer is, "A lot."

Ainsworth told commissioners the shelter has been able to find homes for more than 1,100 animals. That effort took workers and volunteers traveling "13,000 miles in eight trips," according to Ainsworth.

In addition, the shelter has entered a partnership with Petco and is closing in on an agreement with the ASPCA that will help with adoptions in the future.

The shelter has also raised nearly $50,000 for repairs and for a new transport van.

"Bottom line, we're saving animals," Ainsworth said. "The community sees what we are doing and now they're supporting us."

You can watch both Ainsworth and Miller address Commissioners Court in the video above starting at the 30:50 mark.
