Football that counts is almost here.
The Athens Hornets have been working long hours getting ready for their season opener next week against Brownsboro.
"Most of the time this week in practice has been on improving what we have to improve on from position to position for our kids to be able to play at a high level," said Coach Zac Harrell. "So that's kind of our focus this week."
The Hornets are coming off a very good showing against Fairfield in last week's scrimmage. You can read my notes about that scrimmage here.
Next up for Athens is Corsicana, which is coming to town for a scrimmage Thursday night at Bruce Field.
Action will start Thursday night with the JV and Freshman teams at 5:30 p.m. Those squads will each get four 15-minute sessions.
The varsity will take over around 7 p.m. The varsity scrimmage will use the following format:
* 12 plays first-team offense
* 12 plays first-team defense
* 10 plays second-team offense
* 10 plays second-team defense
* One live quarter
Coach Harrell said the three things he wants out of a scrimmage is to get everyone plenty of reps, to evaluate the players, and to keep players healthy.
"We're going to get out there, get it done, and get ready for Brownsboro," Coach Harrell said.
Topics in the interview include:
* This week's practices (:45)
* Fairfield Scrimmage (1:50)
* The defense (3:50)
* Defensive line (6:19)
* Ty Arroyo (8:25)
* Quarterback decision-making in this offense (11:27)
* The receiving corps (14:09)
* The running backs (17:38)
* Corsicana Scrimmage (22:28)
