Malakoff is off to a sizzling start. The Tigers have put up over 50 points twice on their way to a 2-0 record, but Malakoff is back on the road again this week to face a tough Salado Eagles team that is also undefeated and scoring plenty of points.

Offensively, the Tigers have gotten some impressive efforts from their leaders to start the season.

* Mike Jones (Jr.) is a combined 18-25 for 202 yards and three touchdowns passing, plus another 103 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

* Bubba Hicks (Sr.) has racked up 116 yards on 14 carries for a 7.25 yards-per-carry average.

* Chauncey Hogg (Sr.) has 108 yards and two touchdowns on two receptions.

* Jerrion Hall (So.) has 240 yards and four touchdowns on 10 carries.

Things are going just as well on the other side of the ball, with the defense scoring twice last week after forcing Grandview into five turnovers.

"They're flying around to the ball and playing really hard," said Coach Jamie Driskell. "We give up some things here and there, but again, that's early season stuff that we're going to learn from. The key is they're flying around and playing hard."

The Tigers must continue that effort when they travel to Waco-Midway this week to face Clas 4A Salado. Malakoff won in double overtime when these two teams met last year.

Coach Driskell said Salado has a big quarterback who can throw well and also has a good running back. He said they also play fast defensively.

"They're pretty good," he said. "They're going to be a solid challenge for us."

Coach Driskell emphasized that the main thing at this time of the year is improving each week.

"Our challenge right now is us and trying to get better," he said.
