(This interview was recorded Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the TVCC Field House with Coach Sherard Poteete.)

By Michael V. Hannigan

It's deja vu all over again.

The TVCC Cardinals will welcome the Navarro Bulldogs to Bruce Field at 1 p.m. in a SWJCFC Semifinal game this Saturday.

One month ago, the two teams squared off at Bruce Field, with the Cardinals winning 41-24. But the game was close for three quarters.

"It was a tough game," said Coach Sherard Poteete. "Navarro is good. They're coached well and they have some really good football players on both sides of the ball."

Saturday's game will also be the renewal of the series between quarterbacks Darion Peace and Dane Jentsch. This will be the eighth time teams with Peace and Jentsch face each other. Jentsch leads the series 4-3, but Peace is on a three-game winning streak.

There is definitely a rivalry between the two Highway 31 schools.

"There's not much distance between us, and we all kind of recruit the same kids," said Coach Poteete. "It's a little rivalry there."

The fact that the two teams know each other so well will impact the game.

"When you play rivalry games, it’s always a little chippy," said Coach Poteete. "So, which team can eliminate the foolish penalties?"

"Whichever team can be the most disciplined on that, that's going to bode well for them," he said.

Listen to the interview for these other topics:

* Last week's game against NMMI.

* The quarterbacks' play last week.

* Defending Dane Jentsch.

* The importance of converting third downs.

* Situational football.

* The coaching challenge of facing the same team twice in a year.
