Description

In this week’s Cardinal Podcast, Michael Hannigan sat down with Head Coach Sherard Poteete to preview Saturday’s showdown with No. 5 Tyler. The Cardinals, ranked No. 11, open conference play at 7 p.m. at Bruce Field.

Big Game Atmosphere

Both teams are undefeated heading into the matchup, and with just a half-hour separating the two schools, the game promises to deliver a playoff atmosphere.

“These young men, the time and effort that they spend preparing each day during the week, it’s so they can go play in games like this,” Coach Poteete said. “Two undefeated teams, two ranked teams. This is what you think of when you think college football.”

Defensive Leaders

The Cardinals’ defense has been the story of the season so far. Linebacker Lazavier Amos leads the nation in tackles after two games, while the front seven has consistently pressured opposing quarterbacks. COACH Poteete said that group will need another big performance against Tyler.

“The better the front seven does, the less time the back four has got to cover,” he said.

Scouting Tyler

The Apaches opened the season with wins over Dodge City and Snow College, both quality opponents. Their defense has been exceptional, allowing virtually no explosive plays through two games.

“They’ve done a great job of eliminating a big play,” Coach Poteete said. “They put pressure with their front seven, and they’ve got some pretty good guys in the back end as well.”

On offense, Tyler returns its quarterback from last year and features a physical running back from Longview. Coach Poteete described them as balanced, mixing the run with play action.

Cardinals’ Outlook

Quarterback Kaden Brown continues to grow into the offense after joining TVCC this summer. Coach Poteete praised his poise, saying Brown extends plays with his legs and keeps his eyes downfield under pressure.

Special teams are also trending up. Reed Malphurs made every PAT against Monroe, plus field goals from 45 and 50 yards, while punter Max Zuluaga continues to flip the field with long kicks. “When you get down there and cross the halfway point, can you put points on the board?” Coach Poteete said. “And if you have to, can you flip the field? That’s a big part of the game.”

First Responders Day

Saturday’s game is also First Responders Day at Bruce Field. First responders and their families will receive free admission, and there will be pregame recognition and giveaways.
