Show Notes
In this episode of The Second Shift, I sat down with Bill Hennessy, creator of the Ignite Retirement Substack. Together, we explored the complex emotional, physical, and financial transitions that healthcare professionals, especially nurses, face as they approach retirement. Here are the key takeaways from our conversation:
Redefining Identity Beyond the Job Title
For so many of us in healthcare, our work isn’t just a job; it’s a core piece of who we are. Bill and I talked about the deep challenge of stepping away from the bedside and putting down the professional label. Bill made a point that really stuck with me: your worth is never tied strictly to a career title. We discussed how critical it is to recognize your intrinsic value, navigate the identity shift that happens when leaving a lifelong calling, and give yourself permission to step into a new season of life.
“You’re not valuable because you’re a nurse. You’re a nurse because you’re valuable.” (Bill Hennessy)
Updating the Retirement Dream & Pacing Physical Demands
We often set our retirement goals back in our 30s or 40s, but those dreams don’t always align with our physical realities in our 50s, 60s, or 70s. Bedside nursing takes a heavy physical toll, and Bill and I agreed that we have to let our dreams adapt alongside our bodies. Instead of pushing through injury or ignoring what our bodies are telling us, we talked about the importance of pausing, assessing our physical health, and leveraging our transferable skills to transition into more sustainable roles.
“We need realistic dreams for how we feel today... give ourselves permission to be different people than we were when we were 30 and 40.” (Bill Hennessy)
Aligning Your Health Charter with Your Financial Plan
When it comes to retirement anxiety, money is usually at the top of the list, but Bill shared why generic target numbers from financial advisors often miss the mark. He walked through practical steps for tracking real spending, cutting unnecessary expenses, and making intentional adjustments well before leaving the workplace. I also shared why having a personalized “health charter” is just as vital as a financial plan, focusing on stress management, mobility, and preventive care so we can actually enjoy our retirement years.
“Just like we have a money plan, we need to have a health plan.” (Patrick LaRose)

About The Second Shift
The Second Shift is a newsletter plus podcast for nurses who carry the weight of caring for 12 to 14 hours, then come home to begin a second shift - this one is for their families. This is the shift no one sees, one that is equally important. As a nurse, this is my story as well. As a coach, I create space for nurses built on real, honest conversations: a plan that moves you from chaos to a life you feel alive inside of again.
