/ @sgpreviews Wolf Creek: The “True Story” ContextHertzogg loves a movie with real-world grit. Wolf Creek claims to be “based on true events,” but it’s actually a composite of two terrifying Australian cases. Geiter would likely spend a segment breaking this down:Ivan Milat (The Backpacker Murders): In the 90s, Milat picked up hitchhikers and took them into the Belanglo State Forest to torture and kill them. He is the primary inspiration for Mick Taylor’s “hunting” style.Bradley John Murdoch: In 2001, Murdoch ambushed a British couple on a remote highway in the Northern Territory (much closer to the film’s setting). This case provided the specific inspiration for the “car trouble” setup and the mechanic facade.Gruesome Trivia (The Stuff Hertzogg Would Love)The Budget Miracle: The film was made for roughly $1 million AUD. Hertzogg often champions low-budget filmmaking, and this is a prime example of doing a lot with a little. The “night” scenes were often lit by the headlights of the cars because they couldn’t afford big lighting rigs.Improvised Terror: John Jarratt (Mick) stayed in character between takes. He reportedly didn’t bathe for weeks to get that “Outback grime” smell right, alienating the cast to increase the tension. The “Head on a Stick”: The infamous “spine severing” scene (making the victim a “head on a stick”) was based on a rumor about Milat, though it was never proven in court. It remains one of the most disturbing scenes in 2000s horror.
