Description

Dan Brader is a comedian, writer and occasional self-confessed “goon” from New Zealand and currently based in Australia where he performs stand up comedy and runs comedy rooms under the name Blowout Comedy.

Dan joined me the week before Christmas in Melbourne’s Hosier Lane to record what was one of the more relaxed episodes of the year and our final episode for 2024.

Getting to know Dan, you get the sense that you’re sitting in front of a timid character with somewhat of a nervous energy at times, or maybe that’s what recording a podcast in a laneway does to people. But you also feel this side of Dan that’s a heart of gold, draped in humility. The kind that comes from following your heart and not quite knowing where it’s taking you or if you’ll ever “get to the finish”.

In this episode, I didn’t just get to know Dan, I got to like Dan, a guy who in his 40’s, still has aspirations, still gets that glint in his eye when he talks about the possibilities in life, and who’s greatest success will come when living true to himself.

Despite admitting to regrets and describing what it’s been like trying to forge his own path while living in his dad’s shadow, you can tell that Dan wholeheartedly appreciates the journey. But you get a sense that it’s a matter of time and a few risks that may need to be taken before this ticking time bomb of a comedy savage truly unleashes on the stand-up audiences around the world.

There were a few points that encapsulate the blend of humour, authenticity, and inspiration that characterise this episode, reflecting both the personal growth of comedians and the broader commentary on their craft:

* 😂 The Stranger - Lui and Dan humorously describe the isolation of editing as leading to sitting on one's hand to give "the stranger”, bringing a comedic aspect to their conversation.

* Process - Dan shares his dislike for the isolating nature of writing too much, preferring the social aspect of performing, which gives an authentic look into the life of a comedian beyond the stage.

* Comfort Zones - Lui and Dan both discuss the importance of stepping out of comfort zones, with Lui reflecting on his podcast's growth after pushing himself to include video, offering inspiration for growth through discomfort.

* Hard to Impress - Dan talks about how his father, who usually isn't easily impressed with his comedy gigs, was proud of him for performing at a corporate event, providing a humorous insight into family dynamics.

* Comedy and Society - Dan explains his approach to comedy, focusing on provoking thought without just being a troll, showcasing his genuine stance on using comedy to engage rather than just to shock.

* From “Goonery” to Professionalism - The discussion on moving from the "goonery" of comedy to more professional engagements reflects an inspiring journey of self-improvement and career progression.

* Strip Club Incident - Dan shares a hilarious story about his friend's antics at a strip club, which turns into a lesson on alcohol's impact on judgment, combining humor with a slice of life lesson.

* Comedy Room Dynamics - Lui and Dan touch on the tension in comedy rooms, where some comedians might try to impose order, providing a funny yet insightful look into the community's dynamics, emphasising the need for humour over hostility.

* On Being Yourself - Dan's reflection on not wanting to dilute his comedy for TV, preferring to be authentic even if it means not fitting into mainstream formats, speaks to staying true to oneself.

* The Value of Authenticity - Lui and Dan both acknowledge the magnetic pull of authenticity in both comedy and life, inspiring listeners to embrace and express their genuine selves.
