I’m publishing this later than I’d hoped, and it’s a long and boring story. Perry and I recorded our podcast episode for Blue Velvet a little over a week back, but it was stuck on a computer I was having some issues with. So, it’s just hitting now. But, seeing as how we’re talking about a movie that’s nearly 40 years old, I guess it’s still evergreen.

For reasons I describe in the podcast, Blue Velvet was one of the reasons I often hesitated for diving into David Lynch’s filmography. I’d heard it was unsettling, disturbing, a hard and weird watch. And…yeah, it definitely is. We’re not going to be watching it with a church group anytime soon.

But, as with I’m discovering with much of Lynch’s work, it’s also haunting, beautiful, and a bit more hopeful than I’d assumed. I’m loving this opportunity to discovery his films for the first time, and Blue Velvet has haunted me since I watched it, and I’m sure it’s a movie I’ll be returning to to delve deeper into its mysteries.

Look for a few more things this week, including my thoughts on two movies I’ll be screening in the next few days, including Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut and the latest from Paul Thomas Anderson. And if you like We’re Watching Here, don’t forget you can subscribe on iTunes and Spotify!
