Listen

Description

Continuing with my theme of the intersection of technology and spirituality I sat down with Miko Matsumura who is a General Partner at Gumi Crypto Capital.

TL;DR:

We talk about Buddhism, Yoga, Patanjali, Science, Neuroscience, Biology, Atheism, the relationship between Creativity and Stress, Bhagavad Gita, Thich Naht Hahn, The Religion behind Bitcoin, and much more.

For the spiritual and scientific insights listen to the first 45 minutes. If you are interested in keen technology insights Miko has about the nature of blockchain, check out after 45 minutes.

My Thoughts on this Episode:

This episode is the theological and philosophical backdrop to my entire thesis which can be found here.

Miko has a masters in Neuroscience and has been involved with the technology industry for the past two decades. He also has a deep spiritual practice from growing up in the Soto Zen tradition as well as finding inspiration in a years long relationship with the Bhakti tradition of Yoga.

We discussed the core principles of Patanjali Yoga sutras and how when we look into the nature of our consciousness and awareness we find that there is both an observer and an observed.

You can try it right now by reading these words and asking yourself who is reading the words. Try to focus your awareness on the part of you that is observing the words on the screen.

Then focus on the part of you that is observing the observation of these words on the screen. You will find that there is an almost infinite hall of mirrors that takes place when you try to observe the observer and that there is always another layer from which you can observe.

(If this doesn’t make sense and you want it to, don’t hesitate to get in touch.)

Miko states that whatever can be observed is essentially part of nature and thus is subject to deterministic laws that can be studied by science. We can even observe our own brains and how they work through analyzing and integrating our thoughts and emotions.

Yet there is always an observer that is witnessing all this take place. This realm of the observer is the world of spirituality and the numinous, what cannot be deduced through the laws of the universe, what can only be experienced subjectively through consciousness.

If the above sparks inspiration in you or you want to find out more, then I highly recommend listening to the whole episode above.
