The beasts of earth and see represented the empire of Rome in the first century and the corresponding system of Emperor worship. But they point beyond their own day to any empire, system, narrative or ideology that seeks to place humanity in the position of God and direct allegiance away from Christ. In response, Christians are called to patient endurance and faithfulness.
