- Individual player
- Driven by self
- Driven by ego
- May be extremely high individual performer
- Doesn’t recognize negative impact on team
- Unwilling to be a team player
- Team player
- Recognizes the importance of teamwork
- Believes the team is more important than self
- Humble, hungry, and aware
- Understands success is collective, no one wins unless everyone wins
- How to identify
- Coach & lead team to defeat other enemies of teamwork
- Look for team members unwilling to defeat enemies
- Look for lack of participation
- Look for half hearted effort
- Look for evidence of sabotage - gossip, negative attitude, belligerence, etc
- How to turn individual into team player
- Must start with performance & coaching conversations
- Too many leaders avoid this step
- Do not assume they understand importance of teamwork
- Highlight low performance in teamwork
- Make team work equally important as individual contribution
- Commit to coaching
- “We are in this together…”
- You are a team and you will work together to help this individual player
- This is leading by example
- Develop a specific improvement plan
- If they refuse to improve
- You must remove them from the team
- Could be another assignment elsewhere in the company
- Could be termination of employment
- Will show rest of the team that teamwork is important
- Likely remaining team members will thank you & step up
