Policies have a tone of voice. Getting that tone right is key in influencing people to actually follow the policies. Unfortunately, the tone of written policies in many organizations has not kept up with the shift in how leaders actually speak with their employees in modern times (ie., respectfully). Most of us were brought up to think that rules must be bossy in order to work. My guest is Lewis Eisen. Lewis is the author of the international bestseller How to Write Rules that People Want to Follow: A Guide to Drafting Respectful Policies and Directives, 3d Edition. His approach to drafting policy has been adopted by groups at organizations across the US, Canada, and Europe.
Over his lengthy career he has been a practicing lawyer, a technology consultant, and a policy writer in the federal government. He has been providing professional training seminars and workshops for 40 years, and is currently a member of the Faculty of the Professional Education Group based out of Minnesota.
