EPISODE 7: Breathe back your Calm!
This week I want to talk to you about emotional regulation and looking after your Mental Health. Not just because RuOK? Day is coming up, as is Mental Health awareness week, but because more and more I hear of, and observe mental health and wellbeing being a real challenge for many educators and carers. And I want to help!!
I know as an early educator and parent myself, it can sometimes be tricky to connect with children - to respond rather than react - when they’re experiencing big emotions or challenging behaviours, especially if you’re feeling tired or stressed yourself! We've all been there - educating and caring for young children can be a tough gig sometimes! But if we want to be able to co-regulate and build resilient, emotionally intelligent children, we must first be able to self-regulate.
Did you know that something as simple as breathing can help to switch off your internal 'anxiety/stress/anger' system and activate your 'rest and relax' system so that you can respond rather than react to stressful situations? I think focussed breathing is one of the most effective and simple tools we can easily bring into our daily routines no matter what age. That’s why I created the infographic as a quick guide for educators, parents and carers. You can download it below.
