Atualmente, o partido de extrema direita e racista «Chega», do advogado e ex-funcionário público André Ventura, tenta dar continuidade à tradição fascista do Estado Novo.

With the ‘Estado Novo’, little Portugal experienced the longest-lasting fascist dictatorship in Europe. It began with a military coup in 1926 and ended with the Carnation Revolution in 1974. At the end of the Estado Novo, 32 percent of the Portuguese population was illiterate, the average annual per capita income was US$160, and the infant mortality rate was the highest in Europe. In the present day, the right-wing extremist and racist Chega Party, led by lawyer and former tax official André Ventura, is attempting to revive the fascist tradition of the Estado Novo.
