The national meteorological department has put out an alert for heavy rain and flash floods in northern parts of the country for the next few days.
The most extreme northern areas including Upper Nile, Unity and Abyei regions will receive up to 200mm in the first ten days of August, while other parts of the country will receive moderate rainfall of 50mm-200mm.
A forecaster at the meteorological department, Bedredin Fartak, says high water levels from a broken dam in Sudan’s Blue Nile state, is likely to cause more flooding in Maban and Renk.
Already torrential rains and floods from Sudan’s Blue Nile state have displaced an estimated 400 households in neighbouring Renk, Upper Nile state.
The heavy rain also cut the main road linking Renk to the state capital Malakal and the oil production areas of Falluj. The flood waters originated from the collapse of the Butt Dam during heavy rain.
Similar conditions are reported in Ibba County, of Western Equaoria state.
Mr. Bedredin explains more about the expected rainfall patterns in this 4” interview.
