More than 200 primary-age children in Akuak Boma of Bor County have received books and scholastic materials, giving the isolated communities their first experience of a learning environment.
Akuak is a remote island in the Sudd area that is largely disconnected from the rest of Jonglei state.
The items including 120 exercise books, pencils, pens and other scholastic materials were delivered by ‘Salam Action Network,’ a national non-governmental organization focused on peace building, education and women empowerment.
The organisation’s Executive Director, Makuei Achol Thiong, says the pupils receive instruction in the Dinka language and only 24 of the 200 can write the English alphabet.
Makuei Achol Thiong spoke to Lokuri Henry in this interview.
