Victims of a weekend fire in Lol county have spoken of the horror they went through when flames engulfed their homes on Sunday.

Thirty-five people are confirmed dead and seventy others wounded in the weekend fire in Korok East County. 

Twenty-eight people in critical condition have been evacuated to Aweil State Hospital, while more than 50 others with minor injuries are receiving treatment at Mayen Ulem Primary Health Care center. 

“The bush burned for several days and we thought it would go off,” said one victim in Aweil hospital, describing how what started off as a usual bushfire became their source of misery.

“It killed many people including my son,” bemoaned another victim, explaining how he could not see through the thick plumes of smoke. 

A total of 138 households in 7 villages were affected.

The Director of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Lol State, George Aguer says the most immediate need is plastic sheets for the displaced.
