Between cups of tea and dithering paper noises (yes, we are experimenting with what 'dithering' actually sounds like, this time with German Potteries’ Burgenland teacups) Rich and Carola talk citizenship; Carola's application for permanent UK residency; citizenship tests; passport differences; melting pot vs multi-diversity; and various stumbles over the word citizenship (try saying it 10 times…). And we have a chat about the fact that Richard is not exactly a UK citizen but a subject whilst Carola delights in the contents of a British passport, quoting Haynes manual: “One of the wonderfully quirky things about being a ‘loyal royal subject’ is the reassuring regal proclamation residing inside the front cover of British passports – an imperial warning formulated to ward off persons with the temerity to be of foreign persuasion”. We recorded this episode back in March, but it is still timely.
