Isolation and Quarantine Guidance Updates
Exposure (Unvaccinated/Not Up-to-Date): Isolate for 5 days, then mask for 5 days. If unable to mask, isolate for 10 days. If unable to stay home, mask for 10 days. Test on day 5.
Exposure (Vaccinated/Up-to-Date): No isolation needed, but mask for 10 days. Test on day 5.
Positive Test (Unvaccinated/Not Boosted): Isolate for 5 days from positive test or symptom onset (if symptoms appear after positive test). Continue isolation if fever or symptoms persist until fever-free for 24 hours and symptoms improve. Wear a mask during and for 5 days after isolation/quarantine.
Positive Test (Vaccinated/Boosted): No quarantine needed, but mask for 10 days.
Exceptions for 10+ Day Isolation/Quarantine: Children under 2, those who cannot wear masks, and individuals with moderate/severe/immunocompromised COVID-19. Consult a healthcare provider for extended isolation.
Why the Changes?
The CDC found the highest transmission risk is 2-3 days before and up to 8 days after symptom onset. Omicron may shorten this infectious period. Guidance changes reflect evolving scientific understanding and societal factors like pandemic fatigue and staffing shortages. The goal is to balance reduced isolation time with minimal increased spread risk.
Addressing Concerns:
Encourage vaccination and boosters as they protect against illness and hospitalization. Utilize resources like OHA's testing website, COVID-19 Case Support Hotline, and 2-1-1 for information and assistance.
