Rachel Crampsey is a great Jersey small business success story. It wasn’t long ago that Rachel Crampsey was giving away bread she had made to her friends from her Montclair apartment. Then, about three years ago while raising three kids with her husband, in the midst of a market gripped by gluten-free mania, she bought a bakery. Today, her business – Montclair Bread Company – is thriving. She just opened a second retail location at the Montclair Public Library’s main branch. Her bakery operations are moving to one of the hippest redevelopment sites in town, and her main location on Walnut Street will soon be an even more customer friendly café. How did she do it? A recent Kickstarter campaign certainly helped, especially after she won a loyal customer base through her artisan doughnuts. (Local runners carb-loading at Montclair Bread Company have given rise to the bakery’s annual 5K race, “The Doughnut Run.”) But Crampsey says the success of her small business comes down to four basic ingredients, which she reveals on this episode.
