Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
Continuing his correction of the factions in the church in Corinth, Paul turns his focus from the calling of God to those whom He has called. Paul reminds these believers that they were not from the upper class of Corinthian society. In fact, the text says, not many people from the upper class are called into God's kingdom.
God has been deliberate in calling the weak and the lowly to Himself in order to shame those who are strong and wise, in earthly terms. God has designed His salvation in such a way for two reasons. The first is that "no human being might boast in the presence of God" (1 Cor 15:29). To be humble before God is, in fact, the path to life. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Mt 5:3).
Second, God has shown His salvation to be found in Christ, from beginning to end, so that "the one who boasts [might] boast in the Lord" (1 Cor 1:30).
Finding our strength and joy and hope in Christ is the very essence of life. We know, from experience, that to boast in our personal achievements is short-lived and tends to fan the flame of our pride. How much more God-honoring it is … and more satisfying to us … to treasure the wisdom and righteousness and redemption of Christ. Let us spend some time 'considering our calling' in Christ.
