Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 11:1-6
Under normal circumstances, we often bemoan Monday morning with the lament, "Now I have to go back to work." Solomon has a fuller, encouraging word about the nature of work. He has in mind all kinds of work … not just the labor for which someone is paid. Work, he says, is a source of joy and meaning. Ecclesiastes 5:19 reminds us that work is a gift from God. Therefore rather than complain about it, we should delight in it.
Work promotes success. "In the morning sow your seed, and at evening hold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good" (Ecc 11:6). Given the uncertainty of tomorrow's events, diligent work is a means of securing our well being.
Work prevents disaster. "Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks" (Ecc 10:18). What is true of our homes and our cars is also true of our lives. How many lives have been destroyed by neglect … neglect of prayer or serious Bible study or thanksgiving or confession?
Work produces meaning and joy. Ecclesiastes 2:24 calls work an 'enjoyment' and in Ecclesiastes 5:18 it is called a gift from God. There is no greater satisfaction in living than to live as unto God and work as unto Him and to enjoy the sheer pleasure of such work. "Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men" (Col 3:23).
