Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 3:1-14
The passage for our consideration is probably the best known passage in the book of Ecclesiastes. This section is an eloquent picture of life. In 14 contrasting couplets, and with a beautiful rhythmic cadence, Solomon depicts the ebb and flow of living. With the wisdom of his contemplation, the preacher reminds us that living is not a static process, but a dynamic journey which changes often and sometimes changes dramatically. In God's sovereign arrangement, and for His holy purposes, there is a proper time for every purpose relating to life. Every event has its place in the divine order of things. In these verses, Solomon covers the gamut of life's experience from the cradle to the grave.
As we think about this list of activities, we come to some conclusions about life. First, the nature of living is that it is ever changing. It is not static. We are different today than we were a year ago. The circumstances of our lives are different. Tomorrow and next year, things will be different still.
Second, the arrangement of life's activities is quite beyond our control. There are times of laughing and times of mourning and these chapters of life often rise quite apart from our own designs. We dance to a tune not of our own making.
Third, the arrangement of the seasons of life is directed by the decrees of God. God has established the times in which the rain falls and the wind blows. He has established the date of our birth and the moment of our death.
The person of faith trusts in the living God. For people of faith, life is not a matter of random chance, but a matter of the holy design of the master Planner. Blessed are those who hope in Him.
