With regard to the global pandemic, it seems that we should be asking what role God has in all this. What is He thinking about it? What is He doing about this? Is the Creator only a spectator … a passive Observer, simply watching, while this unfolds? … or is He somehow involved in what is going on?
If God is in charge of His creation, how is He in charge? In what way is God in charge? What are the ramifications issuing from the reality that He is seated on His throne? These are not peripheral questions … nor is the Bible silent about these questions.
The Bible says that God has made both the day of prosperity and the day of adversity (Ecc 7:14). From His hand both good and bad come (Lam 3:38). So in some way, all afflictions come from God … either directly or by means of some secondary channel.
The very wording of many Biblical texts forces us to consider God's role in human events, including painful events. God 'brought' Job's troubles to him (Job 42:11). God 'meant' for Joseph's brothers to hatefully sell him away (Gen 50:20). It was the will of the LORD (God the Father) to 'crush' His Son (Isa 53:10). God is so involved in mysteriously, but intricately, governing all the details of His creation … so that His every purpose will come to pass … that the Scriptures say that when disaster comes to a city, for example, God has done it.
Here is one great benefit, for our souls, issuing from the doctrine of God's sovereignty over all things. A God who governs all things, according to His perfect, holy plan, is the only God who can help us in our times of deep need. If we are really convinced of the truth of the sovereignty of God, trusting in Him, it will take us through our darkest hours and our deepest distress.
