Description

How many of you have certain things that trigger you? A situation, a smell, a word….that sends you into a spiral, a freakout or just generally takes you the opposite direction from your BE state? What do you do about it? You avoid it!!!

What is a trigger point? It's a fear (perhaps of failure, or of our significant other repeating a pattern of something an ex did, or a word that brings us back to a time that we were traumatized).

What triggers me? Having someone question my intentions (ignoring - cut them out of life). Criticism (become defensive).  The last natural thing we do when someone hits a trigger point is dig a little deeper. We go into fight or flight (run from it or fight it….which end up being the same outcome).

Trigger point training/flexibility - build connection to areas of your body so that you can key into a muscle and relax it deliberately (just like we contract it). It's a trainable skill, the ability to be so engaged that you can focus in on it and let it go.

HOW do you work them? You hire a professional who shows you tools to do the work. Just like with a trainer. In my real life, I hire the professionals. Coaches for years, and now I'm working with a fantastic therapist because there were a few triggers that I couldn't work through with coaches and self help books.

She's using tools (like EMDR -  an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress) and showing me how to use them myself, so I can break through those trigger points and build the strength to not let them affect me.

My end goal - not to say nothing triggers me….it's just to cease letting those old triggers impact how I move through life and how I feel.
