It is impossible to teach and encourage people to discern by the spirit if you don't teach them and demonstrate to them the Holy Spirit. If you don't discern by the Holy Spirit, the only other option you have, which is what most people use, is carnal judgement. John 6:63 "The Spirit gives life, the flesh profits nothing."
