Evan as Yahweh is giving Moses the details of the covenant - how they are to worship Him, the people break the covenant by worshipping an idol image. God’s right and just response is to destroy Israel, but Moses intercedes on behalf of the people and turns away God’s wrath. But, that does not fix everything. They may yet live to see another day, but the covenant relationship is broken, the people are out of control, sin is running rampant in the camp, and God’s Name and Glory is being damaged. It is God’s grace that He does not destroy them, and it is by God’s grace that he will forgive and restore.
