Exodus 16 describes how God provided the manna to sustain the Israelites during all of their 40 years of wilderness wandering. This is the second of three consecutive accounts of the people grumbling because they lacked the basics of life. All three times, God responds by graciously and abundantly supplying exactly what they need. But more than that, the way He provides is intended to develop in them a greater trust in Yahweh as their God who will care for them and accomplish all that He has promised. While everything in the OT points to Jesus, this is one of the accounts that Jesus explicitly names when He identifies Himself as the true Bread of Heaven! What did Jesus mean when He called Himself the Bread of Heaven? What does the experience of the Israelites teach us about God’s provision for us in Jesus?
